International Year of Forests 2011

The UN recently declared 2011 The International Year of Forests.  To launch the event, Yann Arthus-Bertrand created this 7 minute video clip "Of Forests and Men" narrated by Ed Norton.

  1. Despite almost falling asleep to the narrator's voice, I felt like this video was very interesting. My favorite line that pretty much summed up the entire video for me was: "Is the essential being destroyed to produce the superfluous?"

I followed the link that you posted, which lead me to another link which lead me to another link and I found some pretty cool things. http://www.celebrateforests.com led me to some reading about how to US is contributing to this project. That site also gives some other links to check out.

  2. I'd have to say the first minute or so of this video was a little bit too slow, but as it picked up, the information and statistics were quite sobering. Even having not read Alyssa's comment when I watched this, the same line also really jumped out at me and I think for awareness purposes for this cause, they should follow through with that. The visuals were really incredible as well. Wondering though, how is this video available to the public? Like what is being done to push the awareness on this topic? Because I feel like if you had not posted this, I probably would have never seen it...

  3. The fact that we have done more damage in the last 60 years then we have ever done is tagic. I feel like despite the best efforts of people, humans are still going harm the enviroment becuase we are in so deep now. People, especially in America do not educate themselves on issues like this. Just like in politics, they like to go with the flow. They do not make the connection between say their breakfast cearal, and the Rainforest.

  4. Even though 1/3 of the world is still woodlands, the bigger image is how fast these resources could be taken away from us because of greedy people. Most of us do not understand how important forests are for the world, let alone how fast they are being destroyed. We also need to keep in mind the future of the world, and how to keep forests sustainable. With how fast forests are being destroyed, it is scary to think about what will come in the future. If people are uneducated about this issue, or do not care for it, there will be many problems concerning all of us since we are all affected by deforestation.

  5. Thank you for putting this up! I probably wouldn't have been exposed to it otherwise. I thought the biodiversity video was better, but it was still very informative and put things into perspective. I wish the U.N. would advertise these yearly themes a bit more, maybe do it with a program in which ordinary people are able to get involved directly? I don't really know how that foundation works, or the video didn't make it clear enough.

  6. It is sad that we don't respect the land around up. 1/4 of the worlds population lives within the forests while everyone else lives off the forest in more then one way. we however keep destroying it. whats up world? we need to do what he said and "let us live in brotherhood live a forest, standing tall like a mighty tree." this idea of coming together and working like a forest could help the world around us and hopefully safe our planet from ourselves.
