Borneo Live Reef Fish

NYT article on reef fish by Jennifer Pinkowski

  1. "Spawning of reef fish in this area, which supports 75 percent of all known coral species in the world, has declined 79 percent over the past five to 20 years"
That statistic is really really scary/sad... If it has gotten this bad, why haven't more regulations been put in place? This seems like a situation in which people will look back (once almost all/completely all of the species are gone) and say, "man, I wish we would have done something about that." It is really discouraging to feel like we have no power over the situation, and it seems like it will continue in some fashion no matter what level of intervention is taken, especially being so far away.

  2. Do we have no power over the situation? What about as consumers? Can we buy fish that are considered sustainable? How do you find out what fish/shellfish are sustainable? We as a collected group and as consumers have power! We just don't know how to use it. Any ideas?

  3. Aquariums throughout the country are handing out pamphlets on which fish are better for the environment to consume and which ones to stay away from. The Monterey Bay Aquarium even has an entire exhibit on environmentally safe fish consumption. I think that people have the resources, they just choose not to use them properly.
And on the subject of the video, it really suprised me when I heard that basically all of the worlds coral reefs only take up 2% of the oceans in that one little triangle. What was even more disconcerting was the fact that people somehow think that it's cool to eat endangered animals. I honestly don't understand why you would ever want to do that, especially if it is as expensive as they say. In my opinion, it's a practice that needs to be put to an end.
